Living With The Dead is a short horror flick that no one expected to be anything. But when it came out in 2002 it took home twelve awards, including best short film, best actor and best director in a short film.

The plot is pretty simple here. It’s a classic ghost story where a typical young man finds a corpse in his flat and does something you don’t do when you find corpse in your flat – he just leaves it alone. This is a fatal mistake as Kyle’s life begins to transform beyond recognition. Kyle begins to slowly realize that if he doesn’t take fast action he will be going insane as the corpse tries to eradicate his social and love interests in life. He messes with his head and his life to the point of transforming Kyle into a different person ready to fight for his right to reclaim his existence.

There is some gore for the horror fan to squirm with pleasure and some fear to keep the intellectual bunch riveted to their seats. The visuals are stylish, gothic and startling and the suspense nails you down to your seat until the last second of this short feature.

Short horror joys

The dead have come to the horror genre from the start. Ghosts, vampires, and zombies are the main protagonists of all-time horror. We’ve seen a return of the zombie franchise in the blockbuster pool and the intellectual type of classic dramas set in zombie environments. George Romero is still at it of course, with plans to please the genre fans for years to come. There’s been some return of vampires, with the best attempts by Japanese masters.

But there is a different kind of horror emerging on the scene – the short horror film with a different type of dead. These films receive more and more critical support and have acquired strong fan following with some movies achieving cult status. Short horror is different since it doesn’t require the elaborateness of blockbuster crowd-pleasers that look great but have no or little substance to them except cheesy predictable messages. A short film like Living With The Dead is a different story altogether. It aims to please no big money producers or the faceless average theatre goers. It’s just a short little piece about a guy living next to another guy different from him in the mere fact that he is no longer alive. Check this one out. It’s a fun little piece.

The future of horror

June 7th, 2009

The short form is the future of horror. With the take-over of YouTube, Myspace and Twitter, the short form is surely to prevail and come in large, be it the 4 minute music video or the 60 second horror flick. No one has time for anything these days so the-shorter-the-better is the new policy of the age. So let’s look at one outstanding short horror movie Living With The Dead that won a number of awards and generated a fan base that full features would die for.

Living With The Dead is about Kyle, whose life is distinguished by the fact he finds a dead body in his apartment. He proceeds in unusual fashion by letting the corpse be and trying to pretend nothing extraordinary happened. Inside he is deeply disturbed and for good reasons as the viewer will soon learn from the unfolding events.

The dead body begins ruining Kyle’s life step by step taking away his hobbies, love interests and the joy of life. The story is well-measured for enough gore and suspense, the directorial effort is astounding and the acting superb. This film is an example of the growing trend of short flicks finding a niche in the cynical and clichéd movie business.
